Amaryl is a prescription medication taken orally to manage type 2 (non-insulin-dependent) diabetes when diet and exercise are insufficient to control high blood sugar levels. It works by encouraging the pancreas to increase insulin production. In certain situations, it can be prescribed in combination with other diabetes medications.
Follow your physician's instructions regarding the dosage of Amaryl; do not take more or less than directed. Amaryl should be taken with breakfast or the first significant meal of the day. If you forget to take a dose, do so as soon as you remember. If it's nearly time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and return to your usual schedule. Avoid taking two doses at once.
Common side effects can include: anemia and various blood disorders, blurred vision, diarrhea, dizziness, headaches, itching, liver issues including jaundice, muscle weakness, nausea, light sensitivity, skin rashes and eruptions, abdominal and digestive pain, and vomiting.
Like all oral antidiabetic medications, Amaryl can lead to hypoglycemia (low blood sugar). The chance of hypoglycemia may be heightened by skipped meals, alcohol consumption, fever, injury, infection, surgery, excessive physical activity, and the introduction of other medicines. To minimize the risk of hypoglycemia, strictly adhere to the dietary and exercise instructions provided by your physician.
Mild symptoms of low blood sugar may include: blurred vision, cold sweats, dizziness, rapid heartbeat, fatigue, headaches, hunger, light-headedness, and nervousness.
